These safety precautions are general guidelines only. Consult a qualified aromatherapist about essential-oil use, and tell your primary-care physician what you are using because essential oils may interact with prescribed therapy or medication.

Safety First

Keep essential oils in a secure place, away from children and pets.

We Care About You

The term ‘natural’ does not guarantee safety. Read and follow the instructions on the bottle carefully. Unless otherwise stated, never use essential oils on your skin without diluting them with a suitable carrier oil.

Skin Test

A skin test is recommended before use. Place a small amount of the diluted blend on the inside of your elbow, cover it with a bandage and check after 24 hours. If you experience soreness, redness or irritation, do not use the blend. Consult a qualified aromatherapist for guidance on appropriate essential-oil use.

Care for Your Eyes

If an essential oil or essential-oil blend gets into your eye, remove contact lenses and rinse immediately with plenty of comfortable-temperature running water for 15 to 20 minutes. Seek urgent medical or poison-centre advice if pain, irritation or vision problems continue.

Beware of Allergies

If you are allergic to certain foods, do not use essential oils or carrier oils derived from those foods without advice from a qualified health professional.

Care for Skin

Essential oils should not be applied directly to the skin unless the product label or a qualified practitioner explicitly directs otherwise. Oils such as Wintergreen require particular caution.

Precautions for Aromatherapy

Many essential oils have not been fully tested in humans. Always take appropriate precautions when using aromatherapy and follow the product label.

Properties Might Differ from Origin

Essential oils do not necessarily have the same properties as the plants from which they come. Herbal products may contain different chemical components from the essential oil derived from the same plant.

Blended Essential Oils

Effects may differ between an herbal product and an essential-oil blend. Do not assume that the two are interchangeable.

Epilepsy Caution

If you have epilepsy or another seizure disorder, discuss essential-oil use with your medical practitioner before use, especially products containing Eucalyptus oil. Do not rely on a general drop count; follow the specific product label and qualified professional advice.

Variety and Breaks in Usage

Use a variety of essential oils and take breaks from oils you use often to reduce the risk of sensitisation and irritation. A suggested rhythm is to use a blend for four days, take a minimum of four days off, and use a different blend intended for a similar aromatic experience. Follow the product label and professional advice for your circumstances.
